The way Cumbria Police deals with cases involving people with mental health problems is set to change.
The county's Police and Crime Commissioner has been successful in getting more than £3million in funding.
Richard Rhodes says it'll be used to set up a multi-agency team to respond to such cases - bringing in the NHS, Ambulance Service, and the County Council.
The force currently takes 30-40 calls a day where someone involved has mental health issues.
Richard Rhodes said: “I am absolutely delighted with our successful Home Office bid which will enable the Constabulary to direct calls that involve mental health issues to a new, multi-agency hub working on a triage model. The police are currently dealing with an average of 30 – 40 mental health cases a day.
“We look forward to working with partners in the county to dramatically improve the response to mental health cases within in the community.”
The successful bid is for £1.4m in 2016/2017, and £1.9m in 2017/2018.
