An Early Day Motion has been placed in parliament calling on the government to fund a £25million flood defence scheme to protect Kendal, Burneside and Staveley.
The Environment Agency's designed it and it would involve upstream management, better drainage and new embankments.
South Lakes Tim Farron has launched a campaign to persuade the government to build it.
Mr. Farron said: "Our community was devastated by the floods in December. Hundreds of families and businesses have had their lives turned upside down and faced real hardship as a result of the floods. We must do everything we can to prevent that catastrophe happening again, that's why I'm launching this campaign to get the government to fully fund this ambitious scheme to protect our community in the future. I hope everyone in our area will agree to sign my petition so that we can have the best chance of winning this vital campaign."
