Parts of Keswick are being evacuated due to a severe flood warning.

That's the highest level of alert from the Environment Agency, meaning there's a danger to life.

Up to 20cm of rain is expected to fall on Cumbria this weekend - the Met Office has a RED weather alert for rain in place as Storm Desmond passes slowly over the Northwest.

Cumbria Police and the Mountain Rescue Team are currently helping residents in some areas of Keswick to evacuate their homes and attend the local reception centre.

Residents in High Hill Road, Elliot Road, and Crossthwaite Road are being advised to evacuate and attend the local reception centre at St Herbert’s School in Keswick.

A statement from the Constabulary read: "We would urge members of the public to check vulnerable family members, friends and neighbours in the area who may need assistance. If you decide to self-evacuate, please inform your family and friends where you are going, and that you are safe, to avoid concerned relatives contacting emergency services.

"Cumbria Police warn that all the roads surrounding Keswick are blocked and badly affected by large areas of surface water. In particular the A66 (Keswick side of Bassenthwaite and Embleton).

"Motorists are advised not to travel unless absolutely necessary as it would pose a major risk to personal safety and the safety of other members of the public."
