Cumbria County Council has issued an update on its round-the-clock work to keep the county safe and moving during the recent severe weather.

The council says its Fire and Rescue Service saw a very busy 36-hour period over the weekend, responding to a dozen flooding incidents.

11 of the incidents involved flooding of property and one involved a water rescue to recover a vehicle stuck in flood water near Kendal.

Eight of the incidents were in the south of the county, including a call to pump flood water from the entrance of the Daffodil Hotel and Spa, Grasmere, at 03.51am on Sunday, and to pump flood water from the cellar of a hotel in Ambleside, as well as from the utility room of a property in Burneside on Sunday.

Cumbria County Council’s highways maintenance teams are also continuing road clearance work to keep the county moving.

Twelve crews plus support staff cleared debris from the roads caused by flooding. Highways teams removed a number of fallen trees blown down in high winds as well as material washed on to the roads by water running off fells and field, particularly in the west of the county. A number of roads across the county have now been reopened.

Councillor Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member responsible for highways and transport, said: “Our staff have been working flat out throughout the weekend, in very difficult conditions, to keep the county safe, and that work is continuing throughout today. With more adverse weather likely over the coming days, I would urge people to drive with extreme care and not drive through any flood water where they can’t judge the depth.”

11 roads currently remain closed due to flooding, including:

East: B6259 Warcop to Kirkby Stephen

South: B5286 Near Clappersgate

West: B5301 Dubmill Point

West: B5289 Marymount, Borrowdale

West: C2008 Dearham to A594

West: C2083 Harriston Bridge

West: C2085 Ellen Villa

West: C2111 Ireby to Prior Hall

West: C2016 Broughton to Camerton

West: C2027 Southwaite Mill, Lorton

West: U3111 Threlkeld - Mungrisdale
