Cumbria County Council's made a public pledge to children in care.

Councillors agreed "Cumbria's Promise" at a meeting on Thursday.

The commitment to looked-after children includes respecting them; helping them stay healthy; and supporting their education.

The Children in Care Council will ensure the authority lives up to it.

Earlier this year, parts of the Children's Services department were declared inadequate following an inspection.

Cllr Anne Burns, Cabinet Member for Children’s services, officially launched the promise. She said: “As corporate parents we have always sought to do the best for the children in our care; what Cumbria’s Promise does is set out clearly, from the child’s perspective, specifically what that means. It’s a quite a simple thing, but breaking it down into the different elements gives young people a really clear idea of what they should expect and allows them to hold us to account for the quality of care and support they receive. This is about all children and young people, whatever their circumstances, being given the same opportunity to achieve and succeed in life. That’s why I’m so delighted that today all Councillors have signed up to Cumbria’s Promise.”
