Work to clean up after the effects of localised flooding in Cumbria is continuing, after strong winds and heavy rain left tonnes of debris on the county's road network.

Clear up work has been taking place on a number of roads in the last two days.

The biggest projects were on the A591 Kendal bypass, which reopened in both directions yesterday morning after the road was closed due to the amount of standing water. Gullies have been cleaned out along several roads in the Thirlmere, Keswick and Borrowdale areas.

Councillor Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member responsible for highways and transport, said: “Our highways teams have been working hard in challenging conditions, dealing with flooding issues on the road network to ensure we keep the county moving.

"Much of this is due to the perfect storm of weather over recent days, with heavy rain and strong winds bringing down many leaves, causing drains and gullies to block.”
