There are calls for the government to support students in Cumbria, who are from disadvantaged backgrounds, to go on to higher education.
New figures show that only 13% of 15-year old students who are eligible for free school meals went on to higher education.
That's compared to 36% of students who weren't.
South Lakes MP Tim Farron is urging the government to provide more funding to help students from deprived backgrounds go on to University.
Mr Farron said: “These figures show the challenge that students from more deprived backgrounds face when competing with their better-off peers.
The government must not overlook the reality of rural deprivation in areas such as Cumbria, and must continue to look at what more can be done to improve the life chances of poorer students.”
