The NHS in Cumbria's asking people to choose their health services carefully this winter.
As the weather turns chilly, the NHS is asking people to help ease the strain on hospitals.
They say pharmacists; GPs; or the out-of-hours Cumbria Health on Call can deal with most injuries or illnesses.
They add that the likes of colds; hangovers; and the winter-vomiting bug can all be treated in the home with painkillers, rest and plenty of fluids.
A&E and the 999 service are for serious health emergencies which include:
• A major accident
• Broken bones
• Breathing problems
• Severe chest pains
• Unconsciousness
• Suspected stroke
• Severe blood loss
Advice on how to treat a range of common winter conditions by keeping a well-stocked medicine cabinet at home or speaking to your local pharmacist can be found at NHS Choices.
