Cumbrian communities recovering from December's floods have received a further £4.7 million from the government.
The latest funding has now helped the Cumbria Community Foundation’s Flood Recovery Appeal total to reach £9.7 million.
Floods Minister Rory Stewart said: “It is heartening to see life returning to normal after these devastating floods. I would like to thank Cumbria Community Foundation and all those who have donated so generously for all the help and hope they have given to people whose lives were turned upside down. It is a pleasure to match donations and support this important work.
“To make sure there are better flood protections in place in the future, we need local knowledge and tailored solutions – that’s why we have the Cumbria Flood partnership. By working with local authorities, the Environment Agency, land owners and local groups, we are looking at each of Cumbria’s river catchments to find the best answer for every area."
Andy Beeforth, Chief Executive of the Foundation, said: “This is incredible news. We know Cumbria was hit by the largest flooding incident in living memory in December 2015, so this money is very much welcome. We are continuing to receive applications and hear of more individuals and community groups who have suffered due to the floods. Therefore, we are absolutely delighted that we have been awarded government match funding that will help us make even more of a difference.
“These additional funds will go back into the community to assist with flood prevention to ensure the county does not face this devastation again. On behalf of everyone at the Community Foundation I would like to offer our warmest thanks to everyone who has given money and organised fundraising events.”
