Windermere Councillor Ben Berry has been selected to lead the Conservatives on South Lakeland District Council.

The 28 year-old was chosen at a meeting in Windermere last night.

He's represented Windermere, Applethwaite and Troutbeck since 2011.

He said: "It is a great honour to be the Leader of the Opposition. I look forward to fighting for our residents on housing, the economy and on Council Tax. I was born in Kendal and I grew up in Windermere and I am incredibly proud to now serve the whole of this District."

Handing over the baton of Leadership is fellow Windermere Councillor David Williams who added: "I have enjoyed serving South Lakeland as Leader of the Opposition and there is no doubt in my mind that Ben will continue to stand up for our residents. Ben is a true compassionate Conservative and I look forward to working with him."

Grange Councillor Tom Harvey joins Ben as Deputy Leader.

He said: "Ben and I are proud to be Conservatives. We look forward and we see not only challenges but opportunities, opportunities on housing for local people, on growing the economy and keeping our residents' Council tax down."
