Cumbria County Council says it welcomes the government's announcement of a review of the current approach to flood prevention.

Flooding Minister and Eden MP Rory Stewart met with local groups - including the council, on Monday ahead of the new Cumbria Floods Partnership being established.

Council leader Stewart Young says the adequacy of existing defences must be reviewed, as well as looking at the management of water flow across the catchments of the county's main rivers.

Cllr Young said: "We welcome that the government has announced a review of the current approach to flood prevention across the country, including in Cumbria.

"This must include examining the adequacy of existing defences, but also look at management of water flow across the catchments of our main rivers.

"I hope the government will be brave enough to consider all the options and will then be prepared to back it up with the cash which will be necessary to implement any recommendations.

"Cumbria cannot afford another repeat of the devastation we saw to our communities and infrastructure last month, so the work of the Partnership will be vital."
