Cumbria Police issue an update for the communities of the county to ensure safety of local communities overnight.

It is essential that residents of flooded homes do not return to their properties unless instructed to do so as you are putting yourself in danger as many of the flooded properties will be dark and without electricity.

Cumbria Police would like to ask the public whose house are not affected by flood water to stay indoors, to ensure your own safety and that of other members of the public and the emergency services.

Residents are urged to look out for any vulnerable family/friends and neighbours.

Reception centres across the county are being kept open throughout the night and to offer people advice and shelter.

Please find below the up to date list of all the open reception centres:

·         Cockermouth School

·         Kendal Town Hall

·         Keswick School, St Herbets road

·         Greystone Community Centre (Carlisle)

·         Richard Rose Morton Academy (Carlisle)

·         Carlisle Sea Cadets, Nicholson Street (Carlisle)

·         Trinity Church, Wigton (Carlisle)

·         Austin Friars School (Carlisle)

·         Yewdale Community Centre (Carlisle)

·         Currock Community Centre (Carlisle)

Their advice is to not walk or drive across any bridges that are under water as they may be unsafe and could pose a danger to life.

When the water subsides the bridges will be checked by highway engineers and declared safe before they can be used.

Please see below an up to date list of all bridges that have been affected by the high water levels:

Fitz Footbridge, Keswick - washed away.

The roads around Keswick have been opened and traffic is moving clearly around the town.

However, in Cockermouth, fast flowing flood water is still in the town and we are advising people to stay inside throughout the night and for personal safety do not attempt to walk through the fast moving water.

Schools across the county are considering whether to open tomorrow, updates will be given via BBC Radio Cumbria so we are advising the public to be aware for updates.
