River Water Recedes From Cumbria's Roads

Cumbria roads have returned to normality following the weekend's wet weather.

Up to 23 roads were shut in the county yesterday due to low level flooding caused by persistant downpours.

A Met Office yellow weather warning for rain has been cancelled for today - however, alerts are in place for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the RSPCA had to rescue a horse in Burneside yesterday that'd been cut off by flood water.

Chief Inspector Mark Gent, said: “Beau was on an island of dry land in a flooded field, he was surrounded by a fast flowing river on one side and a pool of knee deep water.

“He was quite timid. We tried to catch him with a head collar and a bucket of feed but he kept moving so we used a rope to form a barrier along the river. We then shepherded through the water into another field with higher ground and reunited him with his friend Bomber.”

He added: “Flooding can affect wildlife, farm livestock and pets alike so it’s crucial that we have RSPCA inspectors who are specifically trained to carry out these rescues. Not only does it help animals but it can also potentially stop people putting themselves in danger.”

Among the many road-related flooding incidents and closures at the weekend, a woman had to be freed from her car in flood water in the Kendal area yesterday.

It happened on Savinghill Road at Brigsteer just after 7pm.

A boat had to be used to rescue her - and her dog from the vehicle.
