Police have identified the man whose body was found in the River Kent in Kendal yesterday as 86 year old Charles Maurice Mercer.
Mr Mercer - from Cartmel, died on Monday after his vehicle plunged into the River Kent on Aynam Road.
The vehicle was submerged and police say despite an extensive multi-agency search, Mr Mercer and his vehicle could not be located that night.
Both his body and his Suzuki Jimny were found yesterday morning, in the Scroggs Wood and Natland areas respectively.
A police investigation into the incident is underway led by the Kendal Mobile Support Group. Witnesses to the incident are asked to contact Cumbria Police on 101.
