Highways England says two major projects begin on main routes in South Cumbria today (Monday).

Work to improve driving conditions along a section of the westbound side of the A590 at Brettargh Holt starts today.

Highways England is spending £384,000 on the wear and tear project.

It's being done between the roundabout and the junction with the A6, and will take around six weeks.

Highways England Project Manager Peter Gee said: “To minimise inconvenience to drivers we are carrying out a number of wear and tear repairs at the same time. While the road will be open during most of the work, the carriageway resurfacing will need overnight closures in December but we will publicise these in advance to help drivers plan their journeys.”

The first phase of the work will be done using single lane closures on the westbound dual carriageway with a temporary speed limit of 40mph past the roadworks. The overnight closures are due to take place – between 8pm and 6am each night - for up to eight nights from Monday 7th December.

Meanwhile, drivers using the A590 in the Lindale Hill area are to get safer journeys thanks to a £330,000 project to install new safety barriers.

Highways England says the work between Low Newton and the Meathop roundabout will start today.

Some overnight closures will be in place during the project, which should be finished by the 20th of December.

Diversions will be in place.

Peter Gee continued: “This is vital work to ensure drivers and other road users can continue to enjoy safe journeys along this section of the A590 with the verge-side safety barriers on both the westbound and eastbound carriageways being replaced by new barriers.

“We will need to close the carriageways overnight for three nights as we install and remove the traffic management cones and barriers for the work but otherwise the road will remain open at all times.

"We’ll have clearly-signed diversions in place when carriageways are closed overnight, suitable for all types of vehicles.”
