The South Lakes MP Tim Farron's joined calls for the government to reconsider potentially huge cuts to Cumbria Police.
The county's constabulary says it could be asked to axe more than £25million from its budget when the spending review is made next month.
The force says that'll mean it won't be financially viable.
Mr. Farron's written to the Home Secretary arguing rural areas deserve protection from crime too.
The Lib Dem leader said: "I am writing to the Home Secretary to demand that she reconsiders these proposals. Coming as soon as they do after we have heard of the Government’s plans to close the courts in Kendal leaves me wondering whether the Conservative Government think we actually don’t have any crime in this part of the world. I only wish this was true but sadly it isn’t and people in rural areas like ours have as much right to protection from crime as any everyone else."
