Plans are in place to "keep Cumbria connected", should heavy snow hit the county.

24,000 tonnes of salt have been stockpiled, with 33 gritters on standby.

Cumbria County Council has set aside nearly £3.7 million to keep the roads clear this winter.

The priority 1 routes can be found by clicking here - they include many main roads across the county and are treated in less than three hours during freezing conditions.

Priority 2 routes can be found by clicking here - they include A, B and C roads, which will be treated in five hours.

One notable route not shown on the maps is the A590 - that's the responsibility of Highways England, which also deals with the M6.

Councillor Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member responsible for highways and transport, said: “I know our winter maintenance service is greatly valued by the travelling public and the council remains committed to providing the best possible service, even at a time of unprecedented pressure on council budgets.

“Dealing with severe winter conditions on a road network like Cumbria’s, with some of the highest terrain and most challenging conditions in the country, is a complex operation and once again we’re prepared for another busy winter ahead. Our gritting teams play a vital role in keeping the county moving, often going out at night in extreme weather to ensure Cumbria stays connected.”

Members of the public can keep track of the council’s daily gritting plans for the road network this winter via the council’s website and through a dedicated Twitter account.
