Cumbria County Council has made a commitment to "embrace all things digital".

Its Cabinet has approved its very first digital strategy, designed to make council services even easier to access at any time of the day, on the web.

Part of the plans will include offering more help for local people who may need to improve their online skills to be able to take advantage of the development.

Commenting on the new strategy Councillor Barry Doughty, Cabinet member for Central Support Services, said: "Here in Cumbria we are already doing some very exciting things including the roll out of superfast broadband through our Connecting Cumbria project and we already have some really innovative digital training and support programmes like the one in Barrow Library that has just won a regional digital excellence award.

“But there are still many more opportunities for us to use technology in more effective and innovative ways. Alongside our more traditional access points this new approach will give us an opportunity to reduce the cost of some of the services we provide and encourages more automation and self-service for those that want it.

“The county council already has a range of digital options in place for a number of services, e.g. applying for a school place, renewing library books, booking appointments with a registrar, applying for a blue badge etc. but to fully get the benefits that digital can bring we need to do more to keep up with the pace of change and the expectations of our customers, developing web-based services so easy and smooth to use that people prefer to use them.

“Finally we are also about to move into phase two of Connecting Cumbria. This will help deliver superfast broadband to even more communities, including those in rural areas, taking our coverage up to 95 per cent by 2017.”
