It's a big week for fire safety in Cumbria, with two annual campaigns kicking off today (Monday).

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service is holding awareness weeks for Gas Safety and Fire Doors.

It's all part of the Fire Kills campaign, with authorities encouraging home owners to check their gas appliances and fire doors.

The fifth annual Gas Safety Week will see organisations from across the UK working together to raise awareness of the dangers of poorly maintained gas appliances, which cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.

In the last year, at least 68, 000 homes in the UK escapes deadly gas incidents such as these, by engineers switching off dangerous appliances.

Nearly one in two of these incidents were caused because a gas applicance had not been regularly serviced and had been left in a poor state.

Meanwhile, for Fire Door Safety Week, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging home owners and users to check the operation and condition of their fire doors and repair or report those that aren't satisfactory.

To find out more on these campaigns, you can visit their websites - www.StayGasSafe.co.uk and www.firedoorsfaetyweek.co.uk.

Meanwhile, landlords in the South Lakes can get advice today on new fire safety regulations that are set to be introduced.

From next month, it will be compulsory for all landlords to fit smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in rented homes.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service has a limited number of free alarms to give out which have been donated by the government.

Landlords can find out more information about the changes at Kendal Fire Station from 1pm - 3pm today.
