A £1.5 million resurfacing project by Highways England gets underway on the M6 southbound between Millness and Carnforth this week.

The 8 week project will be completed along a 2.5 mile section of carriageway near Burton Services, between junction 36 and junction 35.

It begins today (20 June) and involves resurfacing all 3 carriageways, installing added protection against bridge strikes, drainage repairs and installing new reflective road studs and refreshed road markings.

Highways England project manager Peter Gee said: “These are important, if routine, wear and tear repairs to ensure drivers can continue to enjoy safe and smooth journeys along this section of the M6.

"During the resurfacing we’ll be taking the opportunity to provide extra protection for bridges which will reduce the risk of collision damage which can lead to lane or full carriageway closures and delays to motorway users.

“We’ll be doing all we can to minimise inconvenience to drivers by doing most of the work overnight.”

Most of the work will done between 8pm and 6am each night, but the hard shoulder and lane 1 will be closed around the clock throughout the project.

There will also be occasional full carriageway closures with clearly-signed diversions in place.
