The way is open for a Sainsbury's superstore in Kendal after the town's rugby union club sealed a move to a new £11m complex by 2018.
The 83,000sq ft store will create 350 jobs and occupy Kendal RUFC's present site on Shap Road.
Sainsbury's already has planning consent but the project cannot start until the rugby club moves.
Now Morbaine Properties has announced plans to fund the club's relocation north to Mill Field.
The Widnes developer will create a state-of-the-art complex with purpose-built sports and training facilities.
John Parle, managing director of Morbaine, said: “This development has taken years to bring to fruition.
“I would take this opportunity to thank J Sainsbury and the Rugby Club trustees for their patience on this project, which will deliver outstanding facilities and amenities for the people of Kendal.”
Kendal already has Asda, Morrison’s and Booths supermarkets, but the nearest Sainsbury’s stores are in Lancaster and Penrith.
Planning for the relocation of the rugby club has been underway for more than a year and the investment has been backed by a revolving credit facility from NatWest’s Real Estate Finance team based in Liverpool.
Hugh MacDonald, relationship director at NatWest, said “We are delighted to be supporting Morbaine Properties with their development."
