A Lake District charity is trying to raise half-a-million pound to pay for a drugs trial that could help people with Motor Neurone Disease.

The Association for the Independence of Disabled People wants to support work by Lancaster University and the Royal Preston Hospital.

It's doing that by selling discs that go in people's cars to remind them when their MOT, insurance and tax expire.

AID’s spokesperson, Paul Adorian, says: “If one person plants a seed and encourages everyone they know to buy one of our AID Memoire discs, the charity will really start to motor towards its target.

“We would like to see businesses either taking a display box, from which they can sell the discs in their staff canteens, on their counters, or from their reception desks, or having one person in the organisation circulating information about the discs, taking the payments and placing an order.  That way, the word will spread and we can hopefully raise funds for a clinical trial that could improve the lives of so many people.”

Anyone interested in buying a disc can call 015394 48459 to purchase over the phone.  Businesses can also place bulk orders, or request a display unit and discs, by calling the same number.  More information about the charity can be found at www.disabledday.org
