A man who denies an alleged serious sex assault on a child has gone on trial at Carlisle Crown Court.

Carlton Robert Taylor has pleaded not guilty to one charge relating to an incident which is said to have occurred in the Kendal area during the 1980's.

The 58-year-old's trial began today (Tuesday, 10th May), when prosecutor Phillip Boyd opened the case to a jury of nine men and three women.

Mr Boyd alleged that the incident remained with the child, who was later said to have suffered "flashbacks".

A complaint was later made to police when the alleged victim was an adult.

But the court heard that when Taylor, of Peat Lane, Kendal, was interviewed, he claimed not to have known the child, and he maintained the incident "never happened".

The trial continues.
