Peter McCall has been elected as the new Police and Crime Commissioner for Cumbria.
Today (Friday), following an election across Cumbria, Mr McCall has been elected for the following four years.
He will have the responsibilities of setting the policing priorities to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour, maintaining a visible and effective police presence, holding the Chief Constable to account and engaging with communities including commissioning of services to support victims of crime.
He said: “It is a privilege and an honour to be elected the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cumbria.
“I would like to thank everyone that voted for me. I feel with my army background that I am ideally placed with the right mixture of leadership and the ability to get things done to represent the people of Cumbria in the future of policing in the county.
“I have enjoyed the election campaign immensely and have found the people of Cumbria very welcoming and supportive. I now want to build on that support and put Cumbria first. I believe that it is ‘we not they’ and we all have a role in fighting crime.
“I have today sworn an oath of political impartiality and I feel that this is an incredibly important part of the role of Police and Crime Commissioner. I am totally committed to representing the people of Cumbria and doing the best for policing in the county.
“My official first day in office is on the 12th May and I am eager to get on with the job. I look forward to on the 12th May of sharing in more detail some of my election manifesto promises as the next step towards formulating the policing priorities for Cumbria.”
Chief Constable Jerry Graham said: “I would like to congratulate Mr McCall and welcome him to his new role as Police and Crime Commissioner for Cumbria. I look forward to working closely with him.
“There are a lot of challenges ahead as we continue to work within an ever changing police force. Our focus will continue be tackling crime and anti-social behaviour, bringing offenders to justice and dealing with those issues that matter most to our communities.
“Cumbria has one of the lowest crime rates in the country and our priority will be to maintain this and ensure Cumbria remains a safe place.”
Mr McCall will take Office as Police and Crime Commissioner from the 12th of May.
