Cumbria Police launched a fresh crackdown on criminals using the county's roads this week.

Around fifty vehicles were stopped and checked near junction 36 of the M6 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

One man was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst under the influence of a controlled drug - and possession of cocaine.

Three vehicles were prohibited for having defects, two were seized for having no insurance, and one person was reported for driving whilst using a mobile phone.

The intention was to crack down on rogue traders - although on this occasion, no suspected rogue traders were identified.

Inspector Jo Fawcett said: “Operation Rogue Trader is a great opportunity for us to tackle and raise awareness of the issue of illegitimate traders. In Cumbria there have been numerous examples of cold calling criminals undertaking property maintenance work  to exploit vulnerable and elderly home owners.

“As part of the work we have done this week we have seen a large number of illegal activity on the county’s roads and have taken positive action.

“We will continue to carry out operations like this and remind the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or concerns about an individual offering to carry out work to the relevant agency.”
