Concern Rises Over Decreasing Hedgehog Numbers

The Cumbria Wildlife Trust says it's worried about the future of the once common hedgehog.

The charity says the loss of hedgerows, tidier gardens and an "intense" increase in farming are all reasons for the animals' decline.

Now, local people are being urged to report any sightings of hedgehogs, for a new study by the trust.

In just the last 10 years, hedgehog numbers have fallen by 30%, and there are now thought to be fewer than one million left in the UK.

The new online survey, ‘iSpy a hedgehog’, is here.

Charlotte Rowley of Cumbria Wildlife Trust said: “Hedgehog numbers are dropping fast but it’s hard to help hedgehogs if we don’t know much about where they are doing well or not so well.

"As well as gathering this data we want to encourage people to make their gardens better for hedgehogs and we’ll be sending out lots of advice on what you can do to encourage them.

"Even if you haven’t seen a hedgehog you can sign up to receive emails with lots of ideas for your gardens, just head to the website."
