New figures show that two new apprenticeships are needed each day in the South Lakes area, to meet the same level as last year.
Between the 1st of August last year and the 31st of January this year, 440 apprenticeships were started in the Westmorland and Lonsdale.
But that leaves a shortfall of 360 apprenticeships which must be started before the end of this July, in order to meet the same number as last year.
In the full year 2014-15 there were 800 apprenticeships started in the same area.
Local MP Tim Farron said: “Apprenticeships are a fantastic opportunity for young people and businesses alike. Apprenticeships provide young people with training whilst gaining experience in the world of work, and also benefit businesses, which gain access to skilled local labour.
“I’m urging local businesses to take on new apprentices, so that young people have the same opportunities this year as last.
“Thanks to the Lib Dems in government, we saw a huge expansion of apprenticeships under the coalition – almost 4000 apprenticeships were created in our area in that time. The challenge now is to make sure that continues.”
