The legendary comedy double-act of Laurel and Hardy will provide the inspiration for a fun day in Ulverston next week, in support of a pub landlord keen to push himself to the limit for charity.

Next Thursday (March 24th), staff at Furness Building Society’s Ulverston branch will be dressing up, Laurel and Hardy style, to support a local man's bid to raise £16,000 for charity.

Landlord of the town's Stan Laurel pub - Paul Dewar, is taking part in a 1,600-mile cycling, swimming and running challenge to raise funds for the Brathay Trust.

FBS' Ulverston team leader Stephen Calvert said: “Our fun day will attract more attention to Paul’s effort – but cycling, swimming and running 1600 miles to raise money for Brathay Trust is certainly no laughing matter!”

Over the course of 21 days Paul plans to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats and back down to Windermere where he will then swim the length of the lake - around 12 miles.

Once he has completed the swim he will embark on the Brathay Trust 10 in 10 marathon event – ten marathons in ten days finishing on May 22nd.

His aim is to raise £16,000 for the Ambleside-based Trust which helps disadvantaged young people to enjoy outdoor activities.

The Furness operates a charity account for the Brathay Trust which enables supporters to generate an annual payment from the Society simply by saving.

Paul has his own website, and is looking for sponsors for the challenge.

More information about the charity is here and details of the charity FBS account are here.
