People in Keswick and surrounding villages are being encouraged to join the Big Allerdale Switch.

It's an initiative which has collectively saved residents more than £33,500 on their annual gas and electricity bills this year.

Householders who've already signed up to the community energy bulk-buying scheme are now seeing average savings of £262 on their utility bills.

It's operated by i-Choosr, an independent company with experience in collective switching schemes. It works by setting up a reverse auction and inviting energy suppliers to offer their cheapest dual fuel and electricity only deals.

Councillor Carni McCarron Holmes, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive Member for Housing, said: “No-one should have to think twice about turning on their heating and we hope those who sign up to the Allerdale Big Switch will really feel the financial benefits.

“It costs nothing at all to register to switch and it’s really simple - the more people who sign up, the more the potential savings may be.”

Councillor Barbara Cannon, Executive Member for Corporate Resources, added: “Tackling poverty and inequality is a key part of the Council’s Plan and we work hard on schemes like this to ensure people can get the very best deals. We need to step up and do what we can to help our residents to cut their fuel bills and reduce the fuel poverty risk for the people of Allerdale.”

To sign up to the scheme, click here call 01900 702888, or visit Allerdale House or any of the Council’s district offices.
