A yellow weather warning for snow is in place until 6am tomorrow. A Met Office spokesman says it "covers virtually all of north west England."

The snow risk for the region should diminish through this evening and overnight though, as it moves southeast.

Advisor John Hammond said: "A slice of the UK is covered by this Yellow Warning of Snow which covers virtually all of north west England. The warning also extends from western Scotland down to southern England, and is valid from 1100 this morning until 0600 Sunday morning, but the snow risk for parts of north west England should diminish through this evening and overnight, as the area of snow slides south eastwards.

"Snow amounts of 1 to 3cm are likely at low levels, with 5 to 10cm possible above 200 metres across Cumbria. Meanwhile once any snow clears, ice will become a hazard on untreated surfaces. The combination of snow and ice bring a Medium Likelihood of Low Impacts, although there remains some uncertainty as to how far eastwards the snow will extend.

"During the course of late Sunday and into the new working week, the weather patterns are currently shaping up for a cold continental air versus milder Atlantic air battle. Any transition to less cold conditions presents the risk of further wintry weather – so please, keep up to date with the latest Met Office forecast."
