Further Flooding Likely In Parts Of Cumbria On Wednesday

Parts of Cumbria are now under an amber weather warning for rain this Wednesday, with more flooding "likely".

The Met Office issued the newly updated alert this afternoon (Monday).

An amber message means "be prepared".

Forecasters say Storm Frank will hit central and northern Cumbria the hardest.

Most parts will see another 90mm of rain - exposed high ground could get 140mm.

River and surface water flooding is possible given that river levels are already high and the ground so saturated.

The rest of the Northwest will be under a lesser yellow warning for rain.

Meanwhile, strong winds will batter the west coast.

The Met Office's Chief Forecaster said: "A cold-front will become slow-moving across the area on Tuesday night and during Wednesday, clearing again overnight.

"Rainfall accumulations of 60-90 mm are possible quite widely, with perhaps 140 mm or more in the most exposed spots on high ground.

"Some medium-level disruption due to flooding from either rivers or surface water is now thought likely."

The Met Office's John Hammond added: "By the early hours of Thursday morning, the main area of rain should clear, along with the strongest of the winds. Thursday is shaping up to be a day of drier spells but also with some heavy showers at times.

"Looking further ahead, I’m afraid the unsettled theme to the weather looks set to continue, with no sign of prolonged dry weather at the moment."

As of Monday evening, the Environment Agency has just one flood warning in place in Cumbria and North Lancashire - at Keswick Campsite - as well as a handful of lesser flood alerts on some Lake District rivers.

Meanwhile, a statement issued by Cumbria Police's Strategic Command Group on Tuesday afternoon read: "It is currently forecast that Cumbria will see an extended spell of heavy rain and high winds on Wednesday 30th December. Whilst this is unlikely to cause disruption on a scale similar to Storm Desmond in early December, it is possible that there will be further issues for areas that have previously flooded over the past month.

"The Strategic Command Group are therefore preparing themselves in order to respond to flooding issues as and when required."
