Army Back In Lake District As Rain Returns

The Army is back on duty in Cumbria as the county finds itself back in the grip of a new band of heavy rain.

Troops from 2nd Battalion Duke of Lancaster's Regiment have been called back to help protect flood-hit communities just days after the county was first hit by Storm Desmond.

With rain falling on Christmas Day evening and more forecast for the area through Boxing Day, Cobra - the government's emergency committee, is meeting every day over Christmas to consider the most effective courses of action.

The latest help with bolstering flood defences in at-risk areas follows a major help operation earlier this month after floods devastated parts of Kendal, Keswick, Glenridding and Carlisle.

Speaking at the time, a spokesperson from The British Army said: "Soldiers from 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment (2 LANCS) forged through the flooded roadways alongside a swollen Lake Ullswater to deliver supplies to the stricken villages of Glenridding and Patterdale, hit hard by recent flooding in the region.

"Hundreds of villagers had reported their food supplies running low and the water supplies to some parts were also affected.

"Two military lorries set off  carrying supplies from Sainsbury's supermarket in Penrith. The store opened specially to allow the soldiers to load the goods on to their vehicles.

"The groceries and water were taken to the Inn on the Lake Hotel in the centre of Glenridding and then collected by villagers, or ferried across Ullswater to villages by members of the local mountain rescue team."

Warrant Officer Class 1 Mick Grimes, who has been working in the operation's command centre said: "Since we were called in, there's been a bit of envy back in barracks because the other lads there wanted to get forward to the Lakes and do their bit. It means a lot to us to be asked to do this, I suppose because it's part of our recruitment area; we have a lot of Cumbrian lads in the Regiment."

The current Yellow rain alert is due to be upgraded to Amber at 00.15 on Boxing Day.
