The A591 must re-open in a “matter of weeks, not months”, was the message from local MP Tim Farron in parliament yesterday.
The Lib Dem leader called for extra funding to rebuild essential local infrastructure - highlighting in particular the urgent need for the key route to be rebuilt and reopened "without delay".
Tim yesterday visited residents and business owners in Grasmere, for whom the closure of this route cuts them off from their work and their customers. It is currently being suggested that it may be months before the road reopens, which Tim has described as “utterly inadequate”.
Tim said: "The A591 is hugely important for Grasmere and indeed South Lakeland – many residents work or own businesses on the other side of the road closure, and many more rely on tourists passing through for custom.
“It is great to see that businesses in Grasmere are open for trade, but the A591 is essential for them. This road is the key route which connects the north and south Lakes, and it would be crippling for businesses if it were to remain closed for months."
