An urgent appeal is being made for landlords and property owners to help with providing private rented properties in and around South Lakeland for families hit by last weekend's floods.
SLDC says it has been receiving requests for help from residents - many of whom have been advised by their insurance companies to move out until repair work is finished.
That has led to a rise in the number of homelessness enquiries.
An SLDC spokesman said: “We have seen a significant increase in the number of people presenting as homeless in the last couple of days, mainly as a result of being advised by their insurers that they can no longer stay in their homes due to the flood damage.
“We have around 80 households currently in need of accommodation, with the primary need being for accommodation that can be made available for up to six months whilst unfit properties are being cleaned-up and repaired.
“We have already received many offers of help from landlords, property owners and second home owners and have been able to re-house many of the people that have contacted us, and we are very grateful for the assistance received so far.
“But we are still in need of more properties, particularly accommodation suitable for elderly people and people with limited mobility and accommodation for families.’’
Anyone who can help are asked to contact SLDC’s Housing Option Team on 01539 793199 or email homelessness@southlakeland.gov.uk
The contact centre is open on Saturday (12 December) from 8am to 4pm.
Housing officers will also be on hand to offer advice and support on homelessness issues, on 01539 733333.
The out-of-hours emergency homeless line, for emergencies only, is 0870 428 6905.
The SLDC statement added: "Tenants in social housing or private rented accommodation are reminded that they should be contacting their housing association or landlord for help and advice if they have been affected by flooding."
